Ny by, nyt job, nye oplevelser!

Living (expenses) in the UK

The question I get asked the most is what the cost of living is like here in the UK, compared to Denmark.

Before I went here, I honestly did not put much thought into it, my logic being that I had a full time job waiting for me, and that if the locals can live based on what they get paid, then so can I.

Thinking about it a bit further - an employment here has to be able to pay for mortgages, a car, a house, kids and more for regular people to be able to live a life. Being single with no debt, kids or anything else to soak money out of my bank account, it should be super easy.

It is.

I don't make a lot of money, but I live cheap. Not that I have to, I just do, with plenty of spare change for whatever I fancy.

Accommodation...
is easy to find, there are plenty of sites that offer places to stay. My recommendation will be to find somewhere with a Live In Landlord/lady. That way you will also be able to make some easy connections and have a person to answer the most simple questions about living in your area. I know things are really expensive in London - so stay away from there and you can easily find something (for 1 person) at around £350-450/month. As a couple, £600-700 is probably the cheapest you will find.

Food...
is cheaper here. Partially due to lower VAT but that does not account for all the differences. Coming from Netto DK, looking at prices in Netto UK, it is easy to see that prices are lower when I have such a direct way to compare everything. Be it meat, Fruit&Veg, frozen or bread, it's all cheaper.

Phone/Internet
Electronics in general are priced the same here, but connecting to the world around you is expensive. It is not as bad as New Zealand was, but sort of in the middle. In Denmark, you can easily get virtually unlimited data at around £8/month. There is no such thing here. Also, most companies do not accept foreign cards for "security" reasons.

Doctors
Are free. Well, there will usually be a walk-in centre near you which is free. Any medicine you may be prescribed is a flat rate of £8, and can be picked up in any pharmacy (they may charge for card usage). Be careful with some companies however, they may charge you a lot for something you could get for free when it comes to non-prescription medicine.

I'll add more to this post if I get any questions that aren't answered above.

Work and colleagues

It is everything I expected - and more!

My two store managers are a great team with almost too much experience between the two to justify having them both as store managers of one store. I started work on the 7th and today (12th) is my first day off since then (we've been busy!).

Of the current staff, Steven and I are the two Danes in the Ormskirk branch. We have had a few other Danes visit and help out from time to time, but they aren't "ours".

Netto UK is different from Netto DK in a few different ways, all things that I personally consider better, like our bakery! We had bakery training this week and the goods are amazing! Was busy stuffing my face with donuts so this picture is from before we filled up all the trays with cookies, donuts, muffins, bread, buns and what not.

Should you get the chance, COME TRY!

Another exciting thing is the new shelf type, as I hope you can see from the picture, there is light underneath each shelf, also they are blue. These shelves are found in the Health & Beauty as well as the Baby sections.

As of writing we're filling up the shelves with goods so the store will look brand new as it is for the big opening friday. I'm excited as it will be my first store opening for Netto. Somehow I managed to always be in New Zealand whenever there was a store opening in Kolding.

Hurdles

Since last I wrote, some things happened that might be relevant:
I'm actually in the UK, and to be specific: Walton, Liverpool.

I'm not used to flying such short distances, or staying within Europe. I expected to have something to write about the trip here, but as it turns out the whole thing was very smooth and uneventful. So without further ado, here's what I did (hint, also your guide on how to get here!):
I hopped on the train to Copenhagen Airport, flew to Manchester (~2 hours), picked up my luggage and went to the trains, got on the one to Liverpool Lime Street and about 1.5 hours later I was at Lime Street station where I met up with Nick, my new flatmate and we could grab a taxi to Walton.

The place I'm living is very tight, but so is everything around here, that's a view of the street I live on, but they all look like that, so not very special by local standards but centainly something that stands out when you grew up on a farm. I thought these places only existed in Monty Python with people dancing on the roofs, singing about how they all dislike contraception. But no, that is apparently how much of Britain's suburbia looks.

So far so good: Moving and getting into the country; no problem. No the hurdles have more to do with bureaucracy around everything else here: National Insurance number, Bank account, phone contract. Well my next step is to get a "Confirmation of Address" so I can get started with the rest of the paperwork. I'll let you know once I actually start making progress and things happen.

Work? Hopefully starting soon. Apparently one can't start working without a contract and Netto has yet to fix mine, so, waiting :D

Prolog

[På dansk efter den engelske udgave]
The link will, for those who know me, say much of what there is to know: I'm going to the UK. Unlike previously, this is a bit more permanent.

When Netto DK failed to have adequate challenges (marketing or something related to my studies), it was suggested that I went to the UK to help start up things over there. Now obviously it will be much the same, but at least I get to stir the pot a bit and have a different experience outside work.

I have somewhere to stay (Liverpool), and I will be working in Ormskirk. It is one out of six Netto UK stores to open throughout November 2014. I'm leaving on the 4th of November.

Follow this blog for further information on my new adventures.

---
